Am posing behind these leaves, am not hiding! However this picture reminded me of a discussion I had with my college girl gang. It was New Year’s Day and we were all sharing our family pics. I noticed that in all three photos shared, my friends were hiding. They were hidden behind the kids. The respective husbands were in the picture too but they had posed in such a way that they were not completely hidden, even with the kids in their laps. They were either leaning in to the open space or had the kids on the side so more of them could be seen. My friends though, I could not see their clothes. Only faces.
I asked them if this was deliberate. I have used this technique when my clothes are not the best! But that was not the case here. All three of my friends were slightly surprised and had not even noticed that they were all hiding. I asked them if they had any solo pics from those days. None of them did.
That made me think, why is it that we women are so happy to hide? We take on roles that become our identity. Someone’s wife, someone’s mother, someone’s daughter. We hide our own needs and wants and put the duty ahead of all else. Is it any wonder then that we are completely dependent on others to make us happy. Is it any wonder then that we are disappointed by the people in our lives? We ourselves hand over the reign of our happiness to them. Worse, we tell our daughters by example that it is okay to hide. It is not!
Own your life girls. Do not hide.
