Should Children Follow Their Parents Blindly? Or #ThinkBig?

Movie buffs would know the scene in Kabhi Khushie Kabhi Gham where Hrithik tells his dad he wants to do his MBA in London because it is a family tradition. While the dad looks on proudly in celluloid, I could not help wonder how often the situation gets reversed in real life. Imagine a stern father telling his son to go to the same college where he and his ancestors have gone to, imagine him insisting the son do the same course that was around five decades ago. Wouldn’t the son feel that he is being asked to use an ancient desktop in the age of the sleek tablets and iPads? I am sure he would. Family tradition that passes on from parents to children should consist of values, should contain moral code and the lessons needed to be a good human being. Things like Academic choices anold career options should definitely not pass on between generations in the name of tradition.

It was understandable that in older days, people relied on advice and counselling to make their career choice. Today, the internet brings all the information that one needs on the palm of one’s hand. Literally too… on a mobile phone! In this age, children can find out all about new and exciting courses and dare to Think Big. Be it unconventional career choices, be it non academic career choices or even the oft beaten path where they match the skills to the corporate needs, the internet has it all.

A career choice made in one’s teens impacts their whole life. The enormity of this decision can not be ignored. So parents, let your kids Think Big and make a career choice they will thank you for…
