Half Pants Full Pants: #BookReview and #Giveaway

Half Pants Full Pants

Hi guys, today I am going to talk about a book that has been compared to RK Laxman’s Malgudi Days. This book is the first one published by Paper Boat and fits right in with their brand theme of childhood nostalgia. Half Pants Full Pants is also Anand Suspi’s debut book and I am eagerly waiting for his next. In fact, when I told him so he proved that he is one of the most humble guys on twitter. Check this conversation out:

Half Pants Full Pants Review

I was sent the book by Paper Boat. The title itself was intriguing but when I read these words in the accompanying letter, I could not wait to read the book.

From celebrating little joys (like watching TV for the first time) to sharing the most exquisite thrills (like driving a train!), Anand and his friends’ lives are full of innocence, mischief, and pure wonder

Doesn’t this take you back to your own childhood, to times that were uncomplicated?

Half Pants Full Pants – What I Liked

What I liked about the book is the nostalgia, the simplicity. While the stories are set in Shimoga – a small town in Karnataka, the situations are relatable if you spent your childhood in a middle-class household in the 70s and 80s. From fearing the wrath of the mother, to Godrej almirahs to the fascination with the imported things our NRI cousins had or brought back, I am sure you can find many references to your own childhood in the pages of the book. The characters have an innocence and curiosity to them that today’s kids lack. The writing is fluid and easy to read. Off late, since I do not get long stretches of time to read a book, I like short stories where I can finish one story and put down the book in a few minutes.

Half Pants Full Pants – What I Did Not Like

There is a generous smattering of Kannada in the book. For someone who understands the language, it uplifts the setting but for someone like me who does not, I feel I have missed out on some humour, some insight that those words provided. Yes, there is a translation that follows, but still, the nuances of one language, especially slang can not be accurately captured in another. Am I being unreasonable here?

Half Pants Full Pants – Final Thoughts

To conclude, I would say that Half Pants Full Pants restores my faith in Indian writing. After reading many books by Indian authors that I did not like or complete, (look at the timestamps on my Goodreads feed and you will know what I mean) this is a book that has a good story, backed by good writing and editing. It manages to connect with the reader and evoke an emotion that is a rarity these days – Nostalgia. Do pick it up for a trip down the memory lane.
