Yes or No: Is My Choice

Sex in itself is a Taboo in India… not only talking, but even doing it! There is a certain level of shame or embarrassment associated with it. Its ironic that this does not stop our population from exploding, but that is a topic for another day. Today, I want to say that if we call sex a taboo, you can imagine how we view pre-marital sex.

There a plenty of stories we have heard about arranged marriages being broken, about character assassinations and families shamed because their daughter is ‘not pure’. All of this demonstrates the society’s view of pre-marital sex. Usually, it is the woman that bears a brunt of the attack and we conveniently forget that sex is not a solo act. There is another partner involved and that person is never in the picture. The feminist in me fumes at the injustice of it all.

Sex, whether pre-marital or post is a matter of an individual’s choice. It is their body, their feelings and their emotions at play. As long as the two people involved are consenting adults, post or pre-marital should not be an issue at all. It should be immaterial! However, it is not. I have realised that not just in India but certain other countries too, pre-marital sex is frowned upon. Morality, Religion, Social Responsibility and a whole lot is piled on top of this and it buries into oblivion the main point about it being a matter of choice.

YES or NO to Pre-Marital Sex has been a long standing debate in popular media. If I had to choose, I would side with Yes here. It would be upto the person to choose the right partner for the right reasons and not have to justify the choice to anyone. Just because, I want to be able to make my own choices and not have anyone else impose it on me.
