Dancing with Demons by Nidhie Sharma

Plot of Dancing with Demons

Dancing with Demons is a love story set in India. The protagonists are a brooding angst driven boxer Karan Pratap Singh and the mysterious and brave Sonia Kapoor. According to the GoodReads Book Blurb

Karan Pratap Singh is on the brink of winning the Amateur Boxing Championship, when in a moment, he loses it all. His fall from glory seems fuelled by ruthless arrogance and an out-of-control anger management problem. That, however is just symptomatic of a deeper issue. Buried under layers of his fractured subconscious lies a childhood secret he cannot come to terms with.

Sonia Kapoor is a beautiful, volatile young woman with a secret that torments her at night but a secret that she feels no guilt for.

When fate throws Karan and Sonia together in Mumbai, their personal demons and pasts collide and stir up trouble in their fragile and uncertain present. But, is redemption possible without forgiveness?

Dancing with Demons is a fast-paced action drama of love, loss and resurrection

What I Liked about Dancing with Demons

Dancing with Demons is a Indian romance that is surprisingly devoid of mush. While many would call this a negative, it is a big plus in my book. For some strange reason, we have mixed romance and mush with each other so that the two have blended to form a homogeneous product and one seems inseparable from the other. Personally I have developed an aversion to too much mush. For that reason alone, Dancing with Demons was so enjoyable. It is a serious romance. Of course it has the moments of uncertainty, the conflicted feelings and the clashes of personality that are the essential ingredients of a romance. To be able to add all that without a dash of pink tinted rainbows is a feat Nidhie Sharma has achieved with finesse. While an amateur boxer with childhood issues and a gutsy lady whose past is shrouded in mystery are not everyday characters, a reader is still able to relate with the two people trying to make the most of their lives after the set backs that would have broken a weaker person. The writing itself was first rate – the descriptions of settings and situations was just apt to conjure a broad image and then fill it up with details using the reader’s own imagination.

What I Did not Like about Dancing with Demons

The protagonist is a boxer. Naturally, one expects boxing and the fights to be a huge part of the narrative. In several places though, the fights completely takes over and begins to over power the story. The fights are explained in such deep detail that after a while, it starts to snag. I was sorely tempted to skip a few pages!

Final Thoughts on Dancing with Demons

I would like to applaud Nidhie for this book. It is a fantastic debut indeed. I am certainly looking forward to reading more from her. If you like a good drama with strong well etched out characters, this is for you. If you like reading sports related stories, this book is for you.
