Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is in essence, a love story. The book explores love in its myriad forms – between parents or grandparents and children, between siblings, colleagues and more importantly, between friends.

At first, I thought it was about the relationship between Sadie and Sam, since that gets the most space in the book. But, comparing Sadie’s relationships with Sam, Dov and Marx we see that her response to each of them is different. Her personality with each of them is different. I wondered, is this the same woman? Yes, it is. How we are in a relationship is the sum of who we are, and who the other person is.

The writing is beautiful, it takes you inside the minds of the major characters at different points in the book, seamlessly transitioning. I also loved how the backstory and past incidents get woven into the narrative. How a small object, incident or comment takes the character back in memory, making the story richer.

The complexity and depth of characters stands out. Even Anna, is not there to provide only the backstory for Sam. She makes you contemplate about the impact of choices. You see the characters grow, see them change, shed their old beliefs and identities. In that sense, this is also a coming of age story.

Read this book for its depth, and be prepared for something that will stay with you for some time after you finish it.
