Human Capital or the people of an organisation are one of its biggest assets. It is more true in the service industries and IT industries. In these sectors it is literally the people who make up the organisation. When you are a part of a company or with a manager who values people, you can be sure you are in the right place.
- Organisations that value their human capital lay a lot of stress on training, learning and development. Be it upping the technical skills and obtaining certifications or developing soft skills and leadership skills. If your organisation offers these, grab them. It is a good practice to attend at least one training every quarter. We are often so busy in our everyday tasks that we forget to focus on our own skills. But it is absolutely essential to keep sharpening the axe. Not only will you pick up a tip or two but also get to network outside of your immediate work circle.
- Unless you work for a very small outfit, chances are you will have a Human Resources department. An HR department means there will be HR processes and practices. Get yourself familiarised with them. You must know what are your perks, allocations and limits. In several companies, the KRA definition and appraisal processes are not system driven. If they are done via documents it is absolutely essential to understand the processes completely.
- You are an asset to the company. Know your value. Know the value of your work. An organisation of demotivated employees is an unhealthy place. If you understand how your work is valuable to the company then only will be convinced of your own value.
I can almost hear my managers asking me for work effort and man hours 😛
