4 Ways to Style a Blue Coat

4 ways to style a blue wool coat

You read it right! My Diwali look post made me aware that it has been a while since I wrote about beauty and fashion and was really missing doing those posts. So today, I am going to share my experience of styling a thick woollen coat. Having lived all my life in Mumbai, I had almost no experience of a proper winter. I had a great fascination for winter wear though. Who wouldn’t? Those long coats, the high boots.. they instantly glam one up. I bought a brown coat when I first moved to Delhi. It was a flattering cut, the colour was versatile and it served me well for a few years. However, being the lover of colour that I am, I wanted a brighter coat and a thicker one too.

During my North East trip in 2012, my leather jacket sleeve tore and so, I bought myself a long, thick wool coat in the most gorgeous blue and dark blue pattern. The only other option then was a drab black coat and I decided to chuck practicality out of the window and follow my instinct. The only things I looked for are good quality material, a good finishing and lots of warmth. I am so pleased I made that decision. This coat has been my faithful companion on all my travels so far. Here are some ways I have styled it.

My Trainer Avatar #MicroblogMondays

I have missed a few Microblog Monday posts and was not keen on doing it this week so here it is… second post in the day! I am sharing my Trainer Avatar with all of you… This is what I wore during my most recent training trip to Netherlands.

Anks Trainer Ankita

I don’t dress like this in India because our dress code is Business Casual. Besides, let us face it, Indian wear is much more comfortable in the hot humid Indian climate than western formals. So when I travel, I take full advantage of the opportunity.

So what do think of my Trainer Avatar?

Last Minute Ideas for New Year Dresses

If you are the kinds who leave things till the last minute or you thought you would not go and party this new year’s eve but only just decided that you will in fact go and party, chances are you are wondering, “What Do I Wear”? Before you go hunting the malls or boutiques for new year dresses, pause and think. Can you wear something from your wardrobe? Is there a way you can avoid breaking your bank and still sport some fabulous new year dresses?

Last Minute Ideas for New Year Dresses

Am sharing a few ideas here that will perhaps help you look into your wardrobe. The key is to sport a memorable look and all said and done, the new year dresses are nothing but regular dresses incorporated into your entire new year’s look. The dress at the end of the day is just a part of the look!

Style a seldom worn dress differently

This used to be a big challenge for me. I always had the same accessories, the same styling for a garment. Then I started reading a genius called Imogen Lamport, and learnt loads about body shapes, flattering cuts and unflattering styles. Go read her if you haven’t already. She marries the art and science of styling in a way that every woman can benefit! Okay, I digressed. So pick a dress you have morn maybe once or twice and style it differently. In the example below, I am wearing a long black dress. The first option is where I added a lacy shrug to it and the white lacy shrug captures all the attention. In the second option, I shrugged off the shrug and let the pearl neckline take the centre. I also tied my hair up in a french twist so that the look changes.

Refurbish an Old Dress

So you have a dress that your third aunt gifted you a year back when she visited you that was completely wrong for you? See if you can refurbish it. Maybe cut off the unflattering puffed sleeve or get rid of the high collar for a deeper neckline. Maybe take in the flare or take the waist up. Small alterations like this can make a dress usable. If you can manage a little more than that by being a master seamstress yourself or sweet talking your local tailor, then head over to New Dress A Day by Marissa. You’d never want to throw old clothes again! An hour on her blog can give you inspiration to turn any dress from Meh to Wow!

Wear a Dress as Skirt

By wearing an eye catching top over a dress, it can be converted to a skirt. This works well if you want to –

  1. Wear a statement print but feel the entire dress is too much
  2. Wear a top with a lot of detailing
  3. Save money on a skirt / jeans 😉

A combination you have not work before will give you the look of a new dress.

Create your New Year Dresses from separates

I love to do this. If you have a skirt and top in the same solid colour, it can be worn together to give an illusion of a dress. This would work especially well for black. Fish out that black pencil skirt and find a fitted tee or tank top in the same shade of black. Be sure it is the same density else the look fails. Add a lacy shrug or a blazer to it and you have a brand new dress! You can just buy a tank top in the same colour as your skirt and you have a new dress! This will not work for constrasts though and definitely not for a day time party. But it works great for new year dresses since you are most likely to be in a low light setting.

Stack up on loads on Accessories

I cannot stress this enough. Accessories like scarves can completely change the look. I have used scraves in different ways and long shrugs as statement pieces. They catch so much attention that the other elements of the dresses fade away in comparison!

So these are my ideas for rocking your new year dresses. What are yours?

Oxblood Lip – 5 Tips for Rocking It this Winter

5 Tips for Rocking Oxblood Lips this Winter

Oxblood rose to fame in the fall of 2012 and has been gaining popularity ever since. In case you are thinking that Oxblood has anything to do with the the pagan practices, it is not. It is a colour. It is an intriguing shade of deep red. Maroon but not quite, with a bit of purple and a teasing hint of black. That is how I see it. This is me sporting an Oxblood lip.

I had thought that sporting oxblood lips would be very difficult but it was not. Here are few things that worked for me –

5 Tips for Rocking Oxblood Lips this Winter

  1. Flawless Base – I know , know what you are going to say. This is done to death! Yes, but there is a reason for it. Any redness on your face will be accentuated if you wear red tones on your lips. So get your base right. A flawless base will divert attention to your lip colour and not to bumps and spots.
  2. Go Matte – Personally, I find Matte much better looking than glossy. While sporting a dark, statement lip, glossy can look over the top. A matte lip tones down the impact. Unless you are at an event that demands over the top, a matte oxblood lip would be much more appropriate. The pictures above are from when I was at my daughter’s school event and later we went for a drive along the sea. A matte lip suited the occasion perfectly.
  3. Perfect Application – Crooked lines or uneven application will look sloppy. It will completely ruin the impact of your look. What I did was to get a lip pencil instead of a lipstick. Lip pencils are easier to control and give you a better application than a lipstick. It is easy to line and fill your lips with it. You can top it off with another oxblood lipstick if necessary. Try to find a product that has full bodied colour else it does not make a statement. A transparent colour will not bring out the full effect of the gorgeous oxblood colour. Unevenly fading oxblood lips can look very very bad indeed. Invest in a long lasting colour. One careful application and you can forget about touch ups!
  4. Casual Look – Avoid choosing a very formal look while wearing oxblood lips. Tightly pulled back hair for example will look very severe and can age you as well. trust me, I learnt it the hard way.
  5. Match your outfit – Ensure that your outfit is devoid of oxblood. You can wear clothes that have shades of maroon or dark pink. I found it went well with outfits that had a light coloured top. If your outfit has a dark top, the whole look gets too dark. A balancing act is necessary here. If you look at the picture of my outfit, I have paired maroon palazzo pants with a cream tee that has pink and maroon tones.

Black and White Outfit

Black and White Outfit

For my daughter’s birthday party last Sunday, I sported a black and white outfit. I wanted something simple, elegant and extremely comfortable. This Georgette maxi and white lace shrug combo fit the bill to the T!

Black and White Outfit

While scouring our friendly neighbourhood market, I came across this dress. It has a faux pearl detailing on the neck and a free flowing A-line shape. The underskirt has a short frill that gives such a beautiful fall to the dress. I belted the dress around my waist to give it shape and added a white lace shrug.

I wanted a pop of colour in the dress so chose to wear my red espadrilles. I was going to be on my feet the entire while and this pair is very comfortable. I wore a white leather watch and a pair of diamond earrings. That is it. Keeping the accessories minimal kept the focus on the dress.

I kept the makeup minimal as well. I knew I was going to be running around so there would be no opportunity for a touch up. That is why I spent all my time in getting the base right. The pic above is taken four hours after my makeup was done and my makeup still seems fresh. I used the following products for this look –

  1. Benefit Pore Professional Primer – I attribute the freshness to this!
  2. Benefit Boi-ing Concealor – They don’t call it an industrial strength concealor for nothing!
  3. MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation – Applied with a Real Techniques Stippling Brush
  4. MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation – Lightly dusted on to set the concealor
  5. MAC Smolder Eye Kohl – Super black and super long lasting
  6. MAC Mehr Lipstick – It now comes out on special occasions only!

That is it… did you like the look?
