I would like to remain unaffected… really, I would. But I can’t. Kudos to the Indian newscasters of today! They present the stories in such a manner that I can’t just stay unaffected. Try as I might. I wish I could take the news as just news and not feel the emotions that melancholy stories bring with it!

As years go by, we see different versions of our partners. Every new experience shows us something new, something different. Just like the mirrors around us create multiple reflections of us, many different versions of us exist - as parents, as a partner, as offspring, sibling, professional, friend.

Having a partner who supports you when you need a rock, hypes you when need wind beneath your wings, is a true blessing. Thank you for being that.

The algorithm can change, so you need to own the data. A platform can shut down, you need manual backups of the data.

If you are a business owner, do you rely heavily on social platforms like Instagram?

Today, I read a post saying the L&T chairman earne

Today, I read a post saying the L&T chairman earned about INR 51 Crores last year whereas the average salary in the company is about INR 10 lac. They commented on the motivation and resources this man has at his disposal and hence can put in a 90 hour work week.

My first reaction to his statement was that this reeks of extreme privilege. Yes, we’ve firmly established that. He has the money to buy and hire whatever he needs to focus solely on work.

You know what else this statement about 90 hour work weeks reeks of? Apathy. The biggest sin a leader can commit. When the head of a business loses empathy for the people employed, they cease being a leader and instead become a manager. There is no loyalty, no belief in the organization. All work becomes mechanical and transactional. If we do not see the harm in that, there is a problem.

Another problem is the crude statement about staring at one’s spouse. I feel for his wife for sure. He has publicly insulted her. That someone this educated can be so tone deaf, is unbelievable.

You know what else is unbelievable? The PR management. The first wave of reactions coming in were like “No, he could not have said that. This must be a deep fake.” Was echoed in disbelief in so many conversations. Something as shocking that people refused to believe it was true deserves a strong action. The official statement issued by the company sounds like they are not even looking at this as a mild embarrassment. They are aligning with India’s goals they say.

Sure, build a nation of people who work 13 hours a day, 7 days a week. And while you are at it, hook them to machines that drip nutrition into the bodies and keep them in isolated pods so they neither eat, nor need any social interactions. Just build The Matrix and call yourself The Architect.

For the last few years, it feels like my new year

For the last few years, it feels like my new year begins on the 6th. One of the reasons is that we rarely take last week of December off. The second is that we don’t party on NYE. It is usually family time.

So, my birthday is when I feel the new year really begins for me. This year, I feel blessed. The birthday weekend was spent with the family, and the birthday, speaking to loved ones and friends.

Oh, and what do you think about the Birthday Outfit? The saree is from @adachikan and was picked on a whim at the LKO airport departure lounge in 2019. It is a ChanderI fabric that has a beautiful sheen the camera can’t quite capture. My blouse is from a benarsi saree that was in my trousseau. The bangle is a 17 year old kada that was a wedding gift from a colleague. One of my most worn pieces.
.
Wearing a saree and casually walking down the street in Dubai is always interesting because I see a lot of heads turning. Even though there are so many people here from the sub continent, wearing a saree isn’t common. In fact, Aadya asked me why I was wearing a saree. It is supposed to be worn for Pooja and festival only. So hoping I’ll be wearing many more this year, and normalize wearing a saree even if it is not a festival.

Last book of #2024

Yellowface by R.F. Kuang was on my To-Read list since it came out last year. I’ve waited for it to be available on @audible_in for the longest time. When I finally spotted it on the shelves at @theoldlibrarydubai , I had to pick it.
.
The first half and the second half are so different. I thoroughly enjoyed the first half for the character development, the insights into the publishing industry. Without going into the social commentary and racial themes this book touches, I feel that it lacked depth. There could have been more on the subject. It was neither instructive, nor entertaining.
.
We spent much of the book in June Hayward’s mind. It was a chaos, like most people’s, I guess. I loved that June is not a saint. Neither is she evil. She is just a human. A human with flaws, complex relationships, ambition, insecurities, and the need to put herself above everything. Maybe because no one else does
.
