Cloth Diaper – To Do or Not?

Hi everyone, if you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw me talk about starting Cloth Diaper for Aadya and my attempt at exclusive Cloth Diapering. When Aryahi was born, she wore pre stitched triangular nappies. The first four months are one big blur of feeding, sleeping and nappy changes. It was only when the Delhi winter hit us in December that I began putting her in diapers at home because I did not want to be constantly changing her in that cold weather. And then, our lives improved like magic! She was sleeping longer, napping better and mom was not frazzled all the time worrying about where to dry wet nappies.

So for Aadya, we bought a stash of disposable diapers before she came. She wore diapers from day 1. I did not buy any cloth nappies for her at all. When Aadya was a few weeks old, the team at Superbottoms sent me a new born cover diaper to try. I loved the soft mink cover and the cute baby hearts print. However, the diaper sat on the shelf for a while and I read up about the How To’s of Cloth Diapers. Prep, wash routine, fit routine, cover, pocket, fleece, hemp, bamboo became part of my lingo but I was worried – can I do cloth diapering?

My doubts came primarily because of time. I am the primary care giver to Aadya and to a large extent, Aryahi too. How would I find the time? Another question that ran through my mind was whether I could continue once I rejoined work. Do day cares accept Cloth Diapers? Can nannies manage cloth diapers?

While I grappled with these queries, I got Aadya to try the new born cover diaper. Aadya would always scream when I put on her diapers. Scream at the top of her voice like we were torturing her! I noticed that she did not do that whenever I put the cover diaper on her and inferred that she was comfortable in them and actually liked the cloth diaper over the plastic, disposable one.

I began to partially cloth diaper. Which meant that I would use a new born diaper on her everyday once she’d pooped. So she got 3-4 hours of cloth diaper and the rest of the time, she was in disposables. While all of this was going on, summer reached it’s peak and a rash broke out. She had red inflamed skin on her bum and my heart actually ripped a little. Within the next ten minutes, I ordered two more cover diapers from Superbottoms. I had been tilting towards making the shift but the rash was the final draw.

So if you ask me what changed, I would say my mindset. That is what changed. These are some of the factors that helped me

  1. The online cloth diapering community – I found the community of dedicated moms exclusively cloth diapering their babies. The groups are extremely supportive, they happily share experiences, give advice and encourage you. I am a part of two groups now – LLB Cloth Diapering and Superbottoms family.
  2. Mom bloggers – I have to mention Tara and Nilima here as my biggest inspirations. I think I have read all of Tara’s cloth diapering blog posts at least twice! If you are a new mommy considering cloth diapering, go read them. It is a wealth of information.
  3. Superbottoms – This is the only brand of products I have tried and haven’t felt the need to try any other! Every interaction I have had with them has been awesome. While I was exploring cloth diapering, I went to the GCDC event with Superbottoms. Interacting with other moms, the brand itself was eye opening and reassuring. Their biggest plus point is the product itself. Those things have been built with the thought of lasting throughout your diapering journey. The diapers are sturdy, soft and comfortable for the baby. They also come with the cutest prints ever. I had a tough timing deciding my favourites.
  4. My own experience – When I tried cloth diapers, I realised that it was not as high maintenance as I had feared. Yes it takes time but only a few minutes each day. Aadya had begun to outgrow her first batch of new born disposable diapers and the next size was too large for her. I was dealing with leaks and soiled clothes almost every time she pooped. The elastic in cloth diapers has prevented leakage every single time. I realised I’d rather wash the diaper than the outfits.

So that is it people, I switched over to cloth diapers exclusively about ten days ago. I changed primarily for my baby’s comfort. Yes, the lower cost and reduced carbon footprints are added benefits but they will matter only if I sustain. Right now I am pretty gung-ho but who is to say I won’t switch back to the low maintenance disposables later? I sure hope I don’t. In any case, I will continue to cloth diaper even if not exclusively.

My entire stash right now is minimal and from Superbottoms. It comprises of

  • One new born cover diaper
  • Two regular sized cover diapers
  • One Uno All In One diaper
  • Three Super Nappies
  • One training pants
  • Three extra soakers for the cover diapers

So that is it. If you have any questions about cloth diapering or if you’d like to share your experience with me, do comment.

    1. Yes, even my generation grew up in cloth nappies. Hats off to all mommas like you who’d keep changing nappies frequently. I believe they were one time use only…
