I saw Happy New Year yesterday morning and found it to be a good enough entertainer. In true Farah Khan style, the movie had references to tonnes of other Hindi films. In the first five minutes you get three references back to back. That pretty much sets your expectations! Shahrukhs’s expression during Deepika’s 70 minute speech rip off was ultimate…
The film starts slow and then builds pace. It held my 4 year old’s attention till almost the climax. I can safely say there are very few dull moments in the execution. The script is really weak. For fans of heists…think Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen… think The Italian Job… think The Renaissance Man… you get the gist… the heist that should have been the hero of the movie is actually just a side character competing with everyone else.. but then, since when has script been a strong point of Indian films?
Happy New Year is a visual treat. From a smoking hot SRK, to a dolled up Deepika… from a Sonu Sood who does a Dabbangg act to a suave Abhishek Bachchan! Boman Irani’s Parsi Bawa act would be so much more believable if he did not have that irritating twang. Everyone’s comic timing is impeccable and the music is noce and peppy. The film falters on things like the viability of crime and lack of attention to detail… like finger prints. However, the film still scores high on the masala entertainment factor. The performances are awesome and each actor becomes the character they play. Special props to Deepika for playing the marathi mulgi.
If like me, if you like your films to give you a break for those 3 hours and leave you feeling happy and entertained, then you’d love this too!
