Respect and Lack of It

I attended a two part workshop that was organised at work. This was a group of women having 5 – 12 years of experience and we learnt about taking charge of our own careers through the process of self discovery. While there were many nuggets of wisdom and a few Aha! moments in the sessions, something that very strongly resonated with me was about how I respect myself and how my respect can often be perceived for ego. This is equally true when I am misunderstood or when I misunderstand others!

Reflecting

“I have an opinion and the right to express it. This is about self respect and not ego. As a culture we often confuse this self respect with ego and lack of respect for the other person. Do I always have to agree with the other person. Why can I not have an opinion of my own.

Why do people always have the inherent need to ridicule me if I don’t agree with them?”

    1. Yes. And there is a fine line between the two. It takes a lot of maturity to differentiate between the two. My take is that if you are being respectful to others and yourself it is Self Respect. The moment you are disrespectful and your sense of self becomes bigger than the other, it is Ego!
