If you have looked at my GoodReads book list, you would realise that fantasy fiction makes up a huge part of it. It would have to be my favourite genre and I am forever looking for new reads in it. When I was offered a chance to read and review The Sorcery Code by Dima Zales, I jumped at it!
Plot of The Sorcery Code
The book is about set in a place where Sorcerers are an elite group, holding power over the commoners who are just beginning the stir up a revolution given the socio – economic divide between the two classes. The story revolves around a pariah sorcerer who manages to create a magical being, a lady. The lady is trying to learn the ways of the world while exploring her own magical capabilities. Throw in physical attraction between the protagonists, ambitious ex-lovers, political rebels and you have yourself The Sorcery Code.
The Sorcery Code – What I Liked
I liked how this book looks at magic – a complicated series of equations involving probability, mathematics and logic. The sorcerers are coders really who write the spells in the physical world and send them to the spell world which makes magic happen. Made me think of modern day developers who code software and make magic happen on the programs and apps! An interesting and unique way as opposed to the complicated spells from the Harry Potter series. The author has a a believable picture of the world, highlighting the contrasts between the two classes.
The Sorcery Code – What I Did Not Like
What I did not like in the book was its way of telling the story. Often, a character would do something and the author follows it up with a justification of what drove him or her. Sometimes it was a result of past actions, at others their own thoughts and feelings. This was the pattern followed throughout. Maybe the author felt this caused a lack of intrigue in the book and for a certain set of characters, eliminated all explanations at all. Oversimplification at one end and extreme confusion at the other!
The Sorcery Code – Overall Thoughts
Overall, despite not being a fan of the story telling technique, I enjoyed the book quite a lot. I was hooked enough to want to know what happens next and will surely be reading ahead in the series. If you are into fantasy fiction, The Sorcery Code will make for a light weekend read.
Interesting… I love fantasy fiction but am a little skeptical about the story telling style after your review. 😀
Oh but you should give it a go if you like the genre!
I love fictions. The name is also intriguing. Will take your advice. 🙂
